Equine Nutritional Therapy

What is Equine Nutritional Therapy?

This equine therapy is based on the principal that every illness has a nutritional cause. When the body records a particularly low level of one or more nutrients, it shows up in the form of some disease or group of symptoms. When these deficiencies are taken care of by appropriate changes in the diet and adding a custom vitamin mineral supplement, the symptoms disappear.

In its preventive and health boosting aspects, equine nutritional therapy strengthens the immune system, enhances energy levels and uplifts individual performance in any stage of your horses life; growing foal, pregnant mare, breeding stallion, performance horse, maintenance horse, and senior horse.

Knowing how to feed your horse based on his life stage is the first step towards balancing your horses nutrition.

Equine Nutritional therapy can be particularly useful for treating symptoms which are hard to diagnose and those which can be controlled only by a continuous use of drugs, such as allergies, arthritis, laminitis and Cushing’s.

Perhaps the greatest strength of equine nutritional therapy is that it considers and treats the horse as a whole. It takes into consideration the interrelationships of the various organs and systems of the horse’s body.

Equine nutritional therapy uses your horse’s diet and body chemistry along with custom supplements to encourage the body’s natural healing. It does this by:

  • Detoxifying the body of toxic heavy metals

  • Correcting vitamin and mineral deficiencies

  • Restoring healthy digestion

Reducing internal stress and inflammatory tendencies.

In order to achieve these goals, we need to know all aspects of your horse’s health and well being including medical history, dietary history, chronic illnesses and symptoms, digestion, energy levels and exercise, age, weight and life stage.

To compile this information we use two analysis tools; hair mineral analysis and ration analysis. This helps us discover if your horse has any nutritional deficiencies, toxic levels of heavy metals, stress response and recovery issues, inflammatory tendencies and endocrine and enzyme dysfunction’s.

Equine nutritional therapy is a different paradigm or perspective than standard veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Veterinary medicine is based on a diagnosis or naming a disease entity or condition. Once the condition has been identified a remedy or treatment is prescribed.

In equine nutritional therapy naming the condition is not so critical. Instead assessment of body chemistry is the primary concern. The hair mineral analysis and ration analysis can help with this assessment. We construct a biochemical picture of how the body is functioning. Diet and supplements are employed to improve the biochemical balance of the body.

In equine nutritional therapy the body’s self healing ability is recognized at all times. Ill health is considered the result of imbalances that impair the natural healing capability of the body. The focus is on strengthening the body’s defenses by enhancing energy and helping to restore biochemical balance.

quine nutritional therapy may not always address the immediate concerns of the client. The most bothersome symptom may be the last one to disappear. This symptom may be the last one to disappear. This symptom may reflect a deeply buried condition that takes more time to uncover and correct. This can be frustrating for horse owners who want fast results. However often results are fast and permanent. Each horse is different and will respond uniquely to a nutritional therapy program.

When helping your horse we will recommend a diet and custom horse supplement based on your horse’s test results to encourage your horse’s body to heal itself. Nutritional therapy and custom supplements maybe thought of as a method to re-pattern cellular activity. The repeated doses of the supplement gently push the body chemistry in a balanced position energy levels rise. This in turn allows deeper healing to occur such as the elimination of toxic minerals. Eventually the supplement program can be reduced as the improvements become permanent.

Your horse will have a retest date so that their progress can be monitored and if necessary changes made to their diet and custom supplement to encourage your horse’s body to continue healing.

Equine nutritional therapy program based on hair analysis can be integrated with other natural therapies that balance the horse’s body. Progress will often be enhanced when the nutrition program is coupled with therapies that balance body structures (chiropractic), the acupuncture meridians, energy flows (electro-medicine) cranial rhythm, infrasound, bio-sonic re-patterning, and photon therapy, Nikken magnetic and Far-infrared therapy. Any healing that balances the body (as opposed to offering symptomatic relief) will work well with nutritional therapy programs. Symptomatic therapies may also be combined with nutritional therapy when absolutely necessary, but only for as long as they are needed.

If your horse is on prescription drugs a equine nutritional therapy program will generally not interfere with drug therapy. However, your horse may require less medication for conditions as his own body chemistry improves. We don’t recommend abruptly stopping medication when your horse begins a nutritional program. Complete results may take sometime. Also, this is a matter to be discussed with your veterinarian who recommended the medication to your horse.

Equine nutritional therapy, which is safe, simple, cost-effective and yet scientific, can enhance your horse’s health and performance.
